the science behind the breath
Your breath is one of the most powerful tools you have to influence how you feel and function. When you’re anxious or under pressure, your breathing often becomes shallow and quick, keeping your body in a constant state of alert. Restorative Breathwork interrupts this stress cycle, activating your body’s natural relaxation response - lowering cortisol, balancing the nervous system and restoring a sense of safety and calm.
Research shows that conscious breathing directly influences the autonomic nervous system, helping your body move from the “fight or flight” response into the “rest and restore” state. Slow, intentional breathing can increase heart rate variability (HRV) - a sign of a flexible, resilient nervous system - and support greater emotional regulation and balance.
Studies from institutions such as Stanford University and Harvard Medical School have demonstrated that even short periods of structured breathing can reduce stress and improve mood. In one study, participants who practiced simple daily breathing exercises for just five minutes reported greater improvements in mood and reductions in physiological arousal than those who practiced mindfulness meditation alone. Other research has shown that breathwork can significantly lower anxiety and depressive symptoms and enhance the body’s ability to recover from stress.
Breathwork also stimulates the vagus nerve, which plays a vital role in regulating mood, digestion and overall wellbeing. A 2023 meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials found that breathwork practices produced meaningful reductions in stress, anxiety and depression, alongside improvements in emotional resilience and calm.
What makes breathwork so empowering is its simplicity, it doesn’t depend on anything outside of you. With gentle guidance, you can learn to use your own breath to calm your body, ease tension and reconnect with yourself. Many people describe feeling lighter, clearer and more grounded - often after just one session.
Over time, you may notice that you recover more easily from stress, respond to challenges with greater steadiness and feel more at home in your own body.
Breathwork complements counselling beautifully, offering a way to reach and release emotions that sometimes sit beyond words.
By consciously working with your breath, you begin to build a deeper trust in yourself - in your body’s innate ability to find balance, safety and healing from within.

working alongside therapy
breathwork can be experienced as a standalone practice or woven alongside counselling. When used together, it can deepen self-awareness and support emotional processing beyond words. Each session offers space to arrive, breathe and gently integrate at the end
you might choose to experience a single session as a moment of reconnection or explore breathwork more regularly as part of your ongoing healing and growth. No previous experience is needed - just an openness to explore how your breath can become a gentle companion in your journey towards self-understanding and healing
If you’re curious about how breathwork could support your wellbeing, I offer a warm and welcoming space where you can gently reconnect with your body and find calm within the mind
