Frequently Asked Questions
Starting counselling can bring up lots of questions, particularly if you haven’t had counselling before.
I’ve answered some of the things people commonly ask below. If there is anything else you would like to know before getting in touch, you are very welcome to ask.
-
The first session is a chance for us to begin getting to know each other and to talk about what has brought you to counselling.
There is no expectation that you tell me everything straight away, and you do not need to arrive with a clear idea of exactly what you want to work on.
We will talk a little about how counselling works, anything important I need to know and what you are hoping to get from our sessions.
It is also your opportunity to get a feel for me and decide whether working together feels right for you.
-
No.
Some people come to counselling knowing exactly what they want help with. Others simply know that something does not feel right, or that they are struggling more than usual.
You do not need to have worked it all out before you come.
We can start with where you are and make sense of things together.
-
Individual counselling sessions are 50 minutes.
I try to start and finish sessions on time so that you have your full session and there is enough time and privacy between clients.
-
Most people begin with weekly sessions because having a regular space can help counselling gain momentum.
That does not mean counselling has to stay weekly forever. As things change, we can talk together about what frequency feels most helpful.
-
There is no set length of time.
Some people come for a relatively short period to work through something specific, while others find longer-term counselling more helpful.
We can regularly review how things are feeling for you and whether counselling is still useful.
There is no expectation that you stay for a particular number of sessions.
-
Daytime sessions: £70
Evening sessions from 6pm: £75
Sessions are 50 minutes.
Payment is due before your session.

I understand that sometimes plans change.
I ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or rearrange your session.
Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice are charged at 75% of the session fee, and same-day cancellations or missed sessions are charged at the full fee.
If something unusual or unexpected has happened, please still get in touch.
-
If you arrive late, we can still use the remainder of your booked session, but unfortunately I cannot extend the session beyond the original finishing time.
If you are more than 20 minutes late, we will not usually be able to continue with the session.
-
Yes. What you talk about in counselling is private and I treat your information with care.
There are, however, some limits to confidentiality.
There may be circumstances where I need to share information if I believe there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, where there are safeguarding concerns, or where I am legally required to do so.
Wherever possible, I would aim to talk with you about this first rather than doing something without your knowledge.
I also attend regular clinical supervision, which is a professional requirement and an important part of practising safely. I may discuss aspects of my work in supervision, but identifying information is kept to a minimum.
